What is ISO 16745?
International Standards give world-class specifications for products, services and systems to ensure quality, safety and efficiency.
It’s been calculated that buildings and the construction industry are responsible for more than 40% of global energy used, and as much as one-third of global GHG emissions so having an International Standard dedicated to reporting and verifying the carbon metric calculation is intended to provide the foundation for accurate performance baselines of buildings to be drawn, national targets to be set and carbon trading to occur on a level playing field.
Is ISO 16745 something new?
It is the international standard for sustainability in buildings and civil engineering works and it has been updated in 2017. There are two parts to it: the first part provides the requirements for determining and reporting a carbon metric of an existing building and the second part specifies the requirements for the verification of the carbon metric calculation used in Part One.
If I have ISO16745 do I still need ESOS?
Having ISO accreditation won’t remove or replace your obligation to undertake an ESOS assessment if your organisation meets the qualifying criteria for that scheme. Neither will it replace your responsibilities to comply with the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive BUT the process of gaining the ISO standard should assist you in any energy audit process.
Are there other benefits of the ISO 16745 Standard?
Having an ISO standard will also enable your organisation to collect information on your buildings carbon metrics in a way that will better benchmark your performance against other organisations and set realistic and achievable targets for carbon reduction.
Without understanding your building’s carbon metrics, you can’t set targets for carbon reduction, and thus you can’t unlock the financial savings.
Is ISO 16745 right for me?
